Kabaddi: Nitin Tomar's guide to improve your raiding techniques

Play Kabaddi? Had any specific training to improve raiding techniques? That\'s about to change, courtesy of Puneri Paltan\'s star raider. Kabaddi is a sport which has two major components involved: raiding and defence. For a well-balanced team, it is significant to have a solid raiding unit to score points and a watertight defence to keep the opposition at bay. A Kabaddi player needs to focus on both these aspects and must work on his attacking as well as defensive skills. Although I play as a raider but I also concentrate on honing my defence. In Kabaddi, the raiders are required to carry out a successful raid for their teams in order to keep the scores high. I strongly believe it is important for them to be perfect at their game as the raiders have to face a bunch of defenders all by themselves. To define a raid in simple terms, it takes place when the player enters the opponent’s side after crossing the mid-line and manages to get a point by getting a touch on any of the defenders present. As a raider when you are on the mat, there are a lot of parameters one needs to focus on. In my opinion, flexibility, strength, presence of mind, agility, speed are a few qualities to look for in a good raider. While planning an attack over the opposition, raiders use a number of skills to secure a point. According to me, few of the techniques raiders must master are:

1) Hand Touch and Toe Touch

The hand touch and the toe touch is one of the things a player starts with, in Kabaddi. When I began my journey, it was one of the first few things my coaches taught me. A hand touch is simply when the raider touches the defender with his hand. A successful hand-touch requires one to be extremely swift and look for the right moment to strike the defender and score a point. Another technique used is a toe-touch where the raider attacks the opposition by using his feet. In my personal experience, while using the toe touch, an extremely flexible lower body is required to execute that long stretch.

2) Kicks

When raiders plan an attack against the opposition, they use different kinds of kicks, like the front kick, back kick and scorpion kick. In my view, it is an effective move to dodge the defenders and it requires one to be swift, flexible and maintain balance at the same time to execute it successfully. When I am on the mat, I make a decision on the basis of my opponents and depending upon the scenario, I decide which kick to be used.

3) Dubki

I feel it is one of the most effective skills and requires a lot of patience and practice. When surrounded by a number of defenders, raiders use this move to escape and score a point. When the raider goes underneath the arm span of the defenders and escapes their tackle, it is called a Dubki. In my personal experience, the Dubki is an extremely difficult move to execute.

4) Jumps

The Jump is a very useful method to escape defenders on the mat. While facing the defenders, the raider needs to have good judgement and plan an escape route quickly in order to execute the move effortlessly. When I am on the mat, I put a lot of thought and strategy before attempting a jump. They are difficult to execute and as per my experience, they are extremely physically demanding. 5) Bonus

  I believe the bonus point in many matches has acted as a game changer for many teams. The bonus comes into effect when there are six or more defenders on the mat. It requires the raider to cross the bonus line with one foot on the mat beyond the line and the other foot is in the air. This season we had ‘Bonus ka Badshah’ Anup Kumar as our head coach, he gave us a lot of insights on improving this crucial skill.
