Bharath Nishok Kumaran, the lawn tennis player started playing the sport at the age of eight. His dad was fond of the sport and that’s how he started to build his interest in the field. He made to the Quarter Finals of an International Tennis Federation Junior Tennis tournament in November 2016.
Are you a Predator or a Buddha when you on field?
I am a predator when I am on field. Only if I play like a predator, I can think about the strategies and the ways to put down my opponent.
One match that you are very proud of
I played against a Serbian guy in Barcelona in October 2016. I played a close match but I lost 6-7(4),3-6. I played one of my best matches ever because I did the right things in the match.
You have a chance to play another sport. Which one would it be?
I would go for football because I really love the sport. I want to experience how it would feel to play a team sport.
Your ultimate achievement?
My ultimate achievement is to have the most number of Grand Slam Titles. Moreover, to be known as the best tennis player the world has witnessed.
How will you want to be known in 10 years from now?
I want to be known as a very good professional and successful sportsperson. People must admire me in a way which must help them to seek their goals by seeing me.
Area of your game you need to improve?
I need to improve on my service a lot and on the rest of my game too. Sports is a field where u can keep improving day by day. Sportsperson will never stop learning, keep on learning new techniques which would help you to excel.
Is sports a natural talent or a skill that is developed?
I believe it is a skill which needs to be developed over time with sheer hard work. An athlete would have some inherent qualities in them but when proper guidance is given to nurture the skills, the athlete can excel.
The toughest punishment given to you by your coach
Once I was asked to run 8 kilometers in 30 minutes which was really exhausting.
What does it mean to you to represent India?
An athlete’s life would be complete only if they represent India. The feeling to represent India cannot be expressed through words. It would make me really proud to represent my country. It is one of my goals.
Perks of being an athlete
Being an athlete would help you to experience and learn a lot of new things in life. It makes you a better individual both physically and mentally.
Who had the greatest influence in your life?
My parents. They motivate me a lot all the time and they made me a better person. They were beside me whenever I went through hardships.
Common road blocks that stop s from achieving their dreams?
I believe the so called societal pressure does matters a lot. An athlete will have to face financial problems and proper recognition is not given to an athlete.
Best sports movie ever
Dangal. The movie clearly shows how difficult is to bring up an athlete to the world where the athlete can showcase their hidden talent to the world
My Short-term goal is to enter the top 10 ranking in the country and my long-term goal is to take a position in the top 50 International men’s ranking.
Your plans & preparations for TOKYO 2020
I would like to win a medal in the singles category in the 2020 Olympics. I have been preparing really hard to win a medal and I believe I can achieve my goal.
Scariest experience you have ever had?
I slept alone after watching a horror movie that was the scariest experience I ever had.
Your most embarrassing moment
When my friend poked me in class and I screamed and the whole class was looking at me!
Describe one moment that you won’t forget
The first title that I won. My dad gifted me a puppy dog. It was one of my unforgettable moments.

One thing you used to do as a child that you wish you could still do?
I really miss those days when I used to play with my friends. I would love to play hide and seek, cops and robbers even now.
Greatest Indian athlete of all time?
In my opinion, it would be Ramanathan Krishnan. As everyone knows he is a legend that no one can forget.
Your first encounter with a celebrity athlete
When I met my idol Roger Federer in Dubai. It was one of the best moments ever. I cannot express those feelings through words. It was the most embellishing moments in my life.
Which house/team were you part of during school/college?
I was in the Lions house during school. The worst house is the Wolves house.
