She started swimming as a mere exercise for her body which her parents insisted but today she is glad that her parents chose swimming for her. She truly believes that swimming is a natural talent that is inherited. To represent India is like an amazing feeling. She was excited seeing her name on the timing board with the Indian Flag next to her name. She still remembers what her mom told her “You have to suffer only for 2 mins in the water and after those 2 mins of suffering it is all success”. She has made seven state records so far.

Greatest influence in your life

My greatest influence in life are my parents and coach.

Dad knew my capabilities and so he always saw to it that my outcome will always be my best. Mom was always there beside me during my bad races and my best ones. Her support has always been an influence on me.

My Coach just never gave up on me. Whenever I thought to myself that I’m gonna give up, my coach always proved me wrong and made me swim till the very end.

Common road blocks that stop racers from achieving their dreams

Our mind-set! Our mind set is the biggest obstacle. Even if you have practiced the entire year for the competition but then if you just think to yourself you can’t do it, you will lose.

Your naughtiest moment during school days that you can remember

Throwing a water bottle from my classroom which was on the second floor right next to the principal’s office.

Any rituals you follow

I pray before my race. I meet my coach before and after the race no matter what. I always talk to my parents before and after the race.

One teacher you would like to have as your coach

I would not want anyone else as my coach other than Pradeep Kumar sir. He is the greatest coach I have ever known.

One match that you are proud of

One win I am proud of is where I hit my head to the wall while flipping and my forehead above my right eye cut open, I completed the race by closing my right eye the entire race and got it stitched up after my race. I’m not actually proud of losing any of my races.

The toughest punishment given to you by your coach

There are many punishments that I cannot point out but I am glad my coach punished me cause of those punishments I’ve grown stronger.

What does it mean to you to represent India?

It means the world to me. Nothing makes me happier than wearing the blazer with your country’s flag on it and knowing that you deserved it.

Are you a Predator or a Buddha when you on field?

I’m like a predator in the water. I remember how I swam the same event previous time and I chase myself so that I give my best performance.

Your ultimate achievement?

I wanted to be known as “Charu the best Breast stroker” it will be my ultimate achievement.

Area of your game you need to improve?

I have to improve a lot on my mental strength.

Perks of being an athlete

You are always ready for anything ahead of you because you know that nothing can be harder than your training.

Your favorite opponent?

My favorite opponent is the clock. You know you don’t have even a fraction to lose when you hear the whistle blow and dive into the water. Each fraction of a second matter!
