Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made some brilliant saves to ensure that Asian champions Qatar strikers failed to net the ball, resulting in 0-0 draw.

A goalkeeping clinic from Gurpreet Singh Sandhu inspired India to a hard-fought point that keeps them in the running for  2022 FIFA World Cup qualifications.

Chances were at a premium for India on a night that saw Qatar on the front foot for almost the entire 90 minutes, although Sahal Abdul Samad did give Félix Sánchez Bas’ side scare after seeing whisker off the post.

Udanta Singh saw an effort hooked off the post, but Qatar laboured to make their dominance of possession count.

Having lost to Oman 2-1 in Guwahati, after conceding two late goals, India manager Igor Stimac fielded a cautious team and managed to hold their fort till the last second. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made numerous crucial saves, putting in a captain’s performance in the absence of Sunil Chhetri. Sandesh Jhingan, Adil Khan and Udanta Singh put in commendable shifts too.

India have still never beaten The Maroons, but this will certainly fell like the next best thing.
