Yogesh Singh slammed five goals including a hat trick as title contender Haryana thrashed Jharkhand 9-1 while Punjab overpowered spirited Chandigarh 2-1 in the under-17 Khelo India Youth Games hockey competition at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.

In a one-sided fixture, Haryana toyed with Jharkhand and led 4-1 at the half-time. The margin would have been bigger but for the missed chances by Haryana forwards. Abhimanyu, Ankit Malik, Manjeet and Amit Kumar were the other scorers while Navin Kerketta found the mark for Jharkhand.

Later, Punjab scored a goal in either half to subdue fighting Chandigarh 2-1. All the goals in the match came off penalty corner conversions. Prabhsimranjeet Singh gave Punjab the lead in the 12th minute and Sarabjot Singh made it 2-0 in the 46th minute. Three minutes before the final whistle Rohit reduced the margin.

In the U-21 section, hosts Maharashtra humbled Jharkhand 8-3, while Odisha surprised Haryana 4-1 to garner full points in Pool B.

 Maharashtra were the superior team but surprisingly allowed their weak opponents to score three times. Rohan Patil (2), Malhari Chavan, Raies Mujawar, R Saurabh Patil, Abdul Salmani, Ventakesh Kenche and Harish Shindgi (one each) were the scorers for Maharashtra. Birsa Oriya (2) and Patras Kujur (1) scored for the losers.Odisha halted Haryana’s winning spree defeating them 4-1 to emerge pool leaders. The winners played attacking game throughout and never allowed any quarter to their rivals. For Odisha, Sandeep Nilam Xess (2), Gregory Xess and Shilanand Lakra (one each) scored. Skipper Mandeep Mor lone goal for Haryana.
