Dynamic midfielder Radhika says she has a point to ‘prove’ heading into the new campaign in a side that was pushing for a first elusive Hero IWL title.
Can you elaborate a little about your past and what made you get into football?
My sister was a football player, who had a big influence on me taking up the sport of football. During one matchday, my sister was felt very ill and she wanted me to replace her that’s how football came into my life first. I studied in a government school in Cuddalore, I grasped football lessons from Mariappan sir. But summer camps and daily practice made me liking the game more as I progressed myself better.
Is there any specified coach or person who has been always inspiring you to play football or who has been a constant guide to your career from a very young age?
Coach Mariappan was the source of inspiration and it because of him that I have continued football and chosen it as a career. He helped me sharpen my skills and tactics.. And he has been with me through my ups and downs, especially during my downs and motivated me to fight through.
The Indian Women’s football team seems to keep growing as well as the popularity of the national side, how much do you notice the changes from inside the game?
The women’s football in general evolved a lot speaking of the world level. In India it still crawls unfortunately, but in what was formerly, it’s been improved greatly. I like the fact that Indian women’s football rise in the last three years, it perfectly set up more for the future generations. I would like that in future, the women’s football become professional worldwide and that players could really live from the sport with dignity.
Did you have any sporting heroes growing up? Someone you looked up to?
Neymar has always been one of my favorite players because he has a special way of playing which doesn’t necessarily suit everybody and so pleasing to watch.
How’s Sethu FC treating you so far?
This is my first year at the club. I’m really enjoying my time here and its attacking football. I’m so glad that Sethu FC has given me the opportunity to prove myself. I have been at the club a few seasons now and I feel like I’ve progressed a lot.
Tell us a little bit about your new team-mates?
We have a very experienced starting XI and a bench consisting of some incredibly talented names on which we can bank upon in adversities. Our main aim is to develop a strong buildup style of football and win the title in Ludhiana.
What are you hoping to achieve this season both for yourself and for the club as a whole?
We are looking forward to the start of the IWL and we will definitely be giving it our all. Teamwork is key and so every player is going to be important for us to have success. On a personal note, all I want to do now is play and prove myself. The club knows what sort of a player I am, it’s just up to me now to show them what I’m really about.
